Many people confuse self-care with skincare and relaxation. But it's so much more than that. The core of self-care is evident: taking care of yourself—your whole self: mind, body, and spirit.
There are many types of self-care. Honestly, it can mean anything from treating yourself to just taking 5 minutes for yourself every day. The point is to do things for you that make you feel good.
When self-care becomes a part of your life, you feel refreshed, recharged, and motivated to tackle life as an entrepreneur! That's why I'm giving you my top 15 self-care tips for entrepreneurs. Let's go!
Why Is Self-Care So Important For Entrepreneurs?
Self-care isn't just for your appearance or to help you feel better. It's important for your whole self. Let's discuss some game-changing benefits of giving yourself some TLC.
Preventing Burnout
Burnout is the depletion of one's mental and physical strength. Unfortunately, it runs rampant among entrepreneurs. Self-care, among other things, is a great preventative measure for entrepreneurial burnout.
More Productivity & Focus
Focus and productivity are key for entrepreneurs, and self-care can help you achieve or maintain them if you start to burn out.
Practicing self-care will help clear the fog out of your mind, increase clarity on what you're doing, and even boost your creative flow! Talk about personal growth!
Maintaining Your Work Quality
Your work quality tends to slip when you're stressed or burned out. You may not notice, but your clients likely will. But because self-care keeps you less stressed and more focused, you'll never have to worry about "losing your touch." This is extremely important for creative entrepreneurs like Youtubers, designers, and writers.
15 Self-Care Tips For Entrepreneurs
Here are my top 15 self-care tips for entrepreneurs.
1. Choose What's Right For You
If you don't like a particular project or disagree with the client's ethics (like asking you to plagiarize or post misinformation), don't take it. No project is worth risking your reputation or compromising your values. There will be other projects.
2. Always Schedule Me-Time
Life gets hectic. As an entrepreneur, you're probably not getting much time to yourself. But you really should schedule some "me-time." Do something just for you, even if it's nothing at all.
3. Know Your Limits
As I said, your time and energy are valuable. Don't overwhelm yourself by trying to fit everything you need to do in one day. Pay attention to your body, like when you have the most/least energy. Schedule your daily tasks according to the energy you'll need to use to do them.
4. Never Be Afraid To Say No
As a new entrepreneur, letting clients push your boundaries can be easy. But, if a client overloads you with too much or has unrealistic expectations, say no. Don't overwork or stress yourself to the point of burnout for someone else. This is YOUR business.
5. Set Sturdy Boundaries Around Your Work and Home Lives
Being your own boss or working at home may mean you can set your own schedule, but it also means that the barrier between your work and home lives is gone. Set boundaries for yourself and your family. Even having solid working hours or "off" hours can make a significant impact.
6. Have A Steady Routine You Can Rely On
If you don't already have a healthy daily routine, I will tell you right now that this is where you should start. Having a steady routine is the foundation for creating other healthy habits. However, for entrepreneurs especially, having a daily routine to rely on is vital for clarity and concentration.
7. Get Your Body Moving
Exercise is probably the last thing on your mind when you're thinking about self-care, but
I'm not saying you have to establish a hard-core workout routine. Practicing yoga or walking every day can make a huge difference.
8. Have A Healthy Diet
Another one of those healthy habits I mentioned before is having a healthy diet. A healthy diet gives you the nutrition you need to perform at your best and feel good while doing it. This also means drinking lots of water and less caffeine.
9. Go Out And Be Social
Time with friends and family can be a huge act of self-care. Take time to connect with your friends regularly, even when things get busy. Even a ten-minute conversation can help relieve stress.
10. Rest When You Need To
The whole point of self-care is to leave yourself feeling rested and refreshed. Sometimes, the best self-care hour is a little power nap if you can. Be careful not to sleep too long during the day, as it will impact your current sleeping habits.
11. Prioritize Sleep Health
One more healthy habit to add to your self-care to-do list: your sleep health. Nothing is worse for an entrepreneur than an upside-down sleep schedule. Sleep is essential to how you work and how your body regulates stress.
12. Practice Mindfulness
Mindfulness is recommended by some of the most highly successful entrepreneurs. Remember to take care of your mind, too! Take some time every day to be present, still, and aware. Just ten minutes a day can do wonders against stress for entrepreneurs.
13. Get A Hobby
I know you want to be successful. But don't be that person who lives and breathes work. You need to have a hobby—something that takes your mind off of work and makes you happy.
14. Treat Yourself
This is my favourite kind of self-care (and it doesn't mean spending a lot of money). Doing things that make you feel better, happier, and healthier are all forms of self-care.
15. Outsource/Delegate What You Need To
A big way to show yourself some care is to decrease your workload so that you have more time for yourself. You can do this by delegating tasks to your employees or outsourcing them to a freelancer.
