Is your site failing to gain good SEO standings? Are you losing traffic by the day? Have the ranking factors changed?

Search engines like Google undergo algorithm changes all the time, just like social media. It’s important to stay up to date with the latest ranking factors so that your SEO efforts actually have an impact.

Luckily, you’ve come here. As an SEO expert, it’s my duty to stay on top of all of the updates and algorithm changes and learn what’s working for search engines right now.

Keep reading to get the latest 8 essential search engine ranking factors.

Why Are Search Engine Rankings So Important?

You can have the best content and offer the best products or services, but no one will see them if you don’t show up on search engines.

Your website may not show up because specific technical problems are causing crawlability or indexing issues. But even if your page passes through those checks, it still may not rank well. That’s why you need search engine optimization.

Optimization helps your pages show up on those search results pages and start ranking higher, putting you at the top of the search engine result pages (SERPs) and giving you the best chance at getting that traffic.

How Many Ranking Factors Are There?

According to Backlinko, Google has over 200 ranking factors alone. They’re constantly changing, but the most important remain the same: relevance, authority, and quality. The rest are secondary.

Most Important Ranking Factors

Again, the most important things you can focus on are quality, relevance, and authority. You can improve your site's SEO by working on the following ranking factors.

Content Quality

High-quality content is crucial to good search engine rankings. Without it, nothing else matters. So, what is high-quality content? It’s well-sourced, well-written content that’s 100% original and error-free. It should also be highly relevant to the search query. But most importantly, it needs to bring value to the reader, meaning it needs to give them what they’re looking for.

Keyword Optimization

While they’re not the only important fact, keywords are probably the most important search engine ranking factor. Keywords are what tell search engines your content is relevant. If you do any SEO at all, it should be keywords. Make sure your keywords are super relevant to your topic and that your business has a high search volume but a low competition rate. Also, make sure the keywords flow naturally in your content. NEVER stuff them in.

User Experience

User experience (UX) is all about making your website as easy to navigate and as pleasing to the eye as possible. Optimizing for UX means working on anything that increases and improves your visitor’s time on your website, including website design, structure, and content writing.

Structured Data

Structured data, like Schema Markups, are bits of code added to web pages to help tell search engines what your content is about. Adding structured data to your page can fix indexing issues and increase your chances of ranking for Google’s SERP features like Snippets

Social Signals

Social signals are all of the social media links that are sent or connected to your website. Connecting your social media to your website can increase engagement on both ends. But better than that, the engagement also boosts your brand’s reputation in the eyes of search engines.

Technical SEO

Technical SEO includes all of the technical and back-end aspects of your website, like linking, site speed, mobile friendliness, and other indexing and crawlability factors. If you have any of these errors, you need to fix them right away.

Backlinks

Backlinking has become a major search engine ranking factor. These are links from another site that point back to yours. Having backlinks goes a really long way in boosting your website’s domain authority and your search engine rankings.

Brand Reputation

Brand reputation is all about how your brand is perceived online and by your visitors. Many things play into this, like engagement on your blog posts, social signals, backlinks, and citations and reviews for local businesses.
